Finding Articles

The best way to find articles would be to use the Discover@UMSL search tool, which can be found on the library's homepage. Discover@UMSL brings up many different results from all of our various databases, but not everything. If you would like search on a more specific topic, consider searching directly in one of our subject-specific databases.

Vocabulary

Break down your search into concepts. Develop a list of synonyms.

EXAMPLE: "special education" AND technology

Other terms for special education could be "special needs" or "learning disabilities."
Combining different terms gives you different terms.

Topic

Clearly define your search statement. Trouble spots to look out for:

Too Broad - EXAMPLE: children

Solution: Add another concept to your topic which will narrow your search and make it more focused.
EXAMPLE: children AND "special needs"

Too Narrow - EXAMPLE: children AND "special needs" AND autism

[NOTE: To search a phrase use quotes]

Solution: Remove one secondary concept from your search string.
EXAMPLE: children AND "special needs" ~~AND autism~~

Teacher Education and Special Education
Teacher Education and Special Education (TESE) creates a research forum dedicated to the preparation and professional development of teachers, scholars, leaders, and other support personnel who serve children, youth, and adults with disabilities and their families. Established in 1977, TESE publishes original quantitative and qualitative research, systematic reviews of the literature, theoretically grounded position papers, evaluations of personnel preparation and professional development programs, and policy analyses.
Teaching Exceptional Children
Feature articles dealing with practical methods and materials for classroom use aimed at teachers of children with disabilities and children who are gifted; an official journal of the Council for Exceptional Children.
Topics in Early Childhood Special Education
