General Policies of the University Libraries.

Computer Use

  • The public computer terminals may be used to access information resources for educational, instructional, and research purposes only.
  • Faculty, students, staff, and other UMSL affiliated patrons have priority for using the public computer terminals.
  • Please be careful with beverages.  Do not place them directly on top of computer terminals or electronic equipment.
    All beverages must be in spill-proof containers or cups with lids. Water bottles with caps are acceptable.
  • The UM System's Acceptable Use Policy, which lists certain responsibilities and ethical behavior expected of computer patrons, will be followed.
  • The Library Research Commons (computer lab) is run by UMSL's Information Technology Services department and is governed by their rules and policies. The computers in the Library Research Commons are available to UMSL affiliated patrons with valid UMSL SSO IDs and other University of Missouri (UM) affiliated patrons with valid UM SSO IDs.

Laptop Circulation Policy

A limited number of laptops are available on a first-come, first-served basis to current University of Missouri - St. Louis students. Laptops may be checked out at the Thomas Jefferson Library Public Service Desk for a 2 hour period and may not leave the Library.

Only one laptop may be checked out at a time to a patron. Students accept responsibility for any loss or damage to the laptop computer and agree to pay for repair or replacement costs as outlined below.

UMSL students must present a valid University student ID card  or government-issued photo ID and the student must be current in the Libraries' circulation system. Laptops will not be loaned if there is a delinquent charge on the student's circulation record. Patrons may not check out items on behalf of another patron.

Fines and Charges: Damages to equipment and peripherals will be based on the cost of replacement or repair. These charges will be subject to the same collection procedures that are used for fines for damaged or lost library materials. Overdue laptops will accrue fines. All laptops are due to the Public Service Desk before the Libraries close each evening. There is a replacement charge for damage to the laptop and or its peripherals of up to $1630.00.

Laptop FAQ

  • What is the Library's policy about loaning laptops?
    The University of Missouri-St. Louis Libraries provide a limited number of laptop computers for use by students in the Libraries. The laptops are configured by ITS with Microsoft Office & Windows as well as several accessory programs. The privilege of access is governed by UMSL's Acceptable Use Policy.   • Who is eligible to use this service?
    Laptops may be checked-out by current UMSL students who have a valid University ID card and must be current in the Libraries' circulation system; laptops will not be loaned if there is a delinquent charge on the student's circulation record. Students may check out laptops for use in the Libraries for a two hour period, and may renew laptop loans for one additional two-hour period. Laptops MUST be returned to the Circulation Desks in order to be renewed.
  • What features and software does the laptop have?
    If you need a webcam or microphone, please contact the Public Service Desk (314-516-5057) to ask if the current laptops have those features. We recommend that you check a laptop out beforehand to see if the hardware and software will suit your needs for a particular task (such as a test or video conference).
  • When are laptops available for check out?
    Laptops are available for checkout when the Libraries are open and MUST be returned to the Circulation Desks before the Libraries close each evening.
  • How can I check out a laptop?
    Laptops must be checked out in person from the Public Service desk. A valid UMSL ID card is required for laptop check out. One laptop per person. Patrons may not check out items on behalf of another patron.
  • What is the check out period?
    Laptops may be checked out for two-hours of in-library use and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Laptops MUST be returned to the Circulation Desks in order to be renewed. Depending on equipment availability, students may renew laptop loans for one additional two-hour period. The checkout period will be adjusted accordingly for laptops checked out less than two hours before the Libraries close. All laptops MUST be returned before the Libraries close.
  • What happens if the laptop is returned after the time it is due?
    If a laptop is not returned when it is due, the student will be charged an overdue fine.
  • What if assistance is needed with using applications on the laptop?
    The Student Assistants at the Library Research Commons will assist students with computer-related questions.
