Modern Languages

A guide to modern languages resources at UMSL Libraries and on the web.

Use the search box below to look for books and other materials held by UMSL or other libraries.  It does not search our subscription databases for things like online research articles, streaming audio, etc.

  • UMSL Catalog: Materials held at UMSL.
  • MERLIN Catalog: Materials held at UMSL or other libraries in the UM system.
  • MOBIUS Catalog: Materials held at libraries in the MOBIUS consortium, including some public and special libraries.

Try searching the other catalogs if you can't find what you're looking for at UMSL!  These books are free to request.

Use the LANGUAGE OF WORK option in the ADVANCED SEARCH feature to limit by language!

Finding a Book on the Shelf

Print books are organized using the Library of Congress classification system.  The Locations tab will tell you where to find the book.  For example:

Location: UMSL TJ Level 5; Call #: RA408.5 .M38 2006; Status: NOT CHECKED OUT

  • Location tells us the book is on Level 5.
  • Call # helps us find the book on the shelf.  Books are first organized alphabetically, so look for the section with books labelled RA (between and RB).  Then, use the following numbers and letters to search numerically and alphabetically for the right book.  The book may or may not have a publication year at the end.
  • Status tells us the book is not currently checked out.

Other books nearby on the shelf will also be about the same or similar topics!  Use this information to browse for books you may not have found in the online catalog.

Can't find it on the shelf?  Check with the front desk!
