About Vampire: The Masquerade

Vampire: The Masquerade (VtM) is a modern gothic-punk horror TTRPG. Participants play as vampires facing internal faction conflicts, the wider human world, and their own inescapable hunger for blood, known as the Beast. Your character's actions affect their Humanity score - how close or far their nature has remained to their original human soul. Characters must navigate a complicated political network within the world of vampires and also choose their approach to The Masquerade (a mandate to keep vampires' existence a secret).

VtM is one of several games in the World of Darkness series/setting (additional titles include Werewolf: The Apocalypse).

Gameplay

Players create their vampiric characters by choosing their clan (their vampiric "family" origin), disciplinebackgroundand other characteristics. Characters can improve their stats by spending experience points.

Players track the following:

  • their character's blood pool (i.e., the blood they have consumed), which players can spend on powering certain abilities
  • how far their character has strayed from Humanity

The outcomes of character's actions are resolved by rolling 10-sided dice. A character's skill level in relevant abilities determines the number of dice rolled. The game's Storyteller (or, game master) narrates the results and other world/NPC activities.

Current Edition

The current edition of VtM is 5th edition (2018).
