About Call of Cthulhu

Call of Cthulhu (CoC) is a horror TTRPG inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's short story of the same name, first published in 1928, and the wider "Cthulhu Mythos" from Lovecraft and later creators. The game is set in the 1920s, in a version of our world which pits players against cosmic horrors. Players are "investigators" who delve into the mysteries of the unknown, risking descent into madness along the way.

Gameplay

Players create their Investigators by rolling dice to generate character statistics and choosing their occupation and other backstory details. The game master, or Keeper of Arcane Lore, describes the setting, events, and characters with which the players interact. Investigators roll percentile dice (resulting in an outcome between 0-100) to determine whether their actions succeed or fail. Each time an investigator succeeds at a skill roll, they improve that score.

As the game continues, the Investigators encounter horrors which put them at risk of losing their Sanity, either temporarily, indefinitely, or permanently. More so than in some other TTRPGs, players risk losing characters to either death or permanent insanity, requiring the creation of a new character.
