About Pathfinder

Pathfinder is a fantasy TTRPG with roots in the revised 3rd edition of Dungeons and Dragons. The game includes similar races, classes, and core mechanics as D&D, but with revised rules that offer players a "crunchier" role-playing experience. In other words, while players have more options, they also need to keep track of more rules and do more complicated math to calculate the outcomes of their dice rolls.

Pathfinder games typically take place in a single fantasy world, Golarion.

Pathfinder is an excellent system choice for players who want a fantasy game and prioritize more customizable character creation, specific rules for niche situations, or simply the opportunity to explore alternatives to D&D.

Gameplay

Like D&D, Pathfinder uses a d20 system. Players roll a 20-sided die and add modifiers for 6 core character abilities to determine the outcome of their actions. Based on their knowledge of the world and the players' dice rolls, the GM describes how the players' choices affect the story. Certain actions will also require rolling different types of dice.

Players create their characters by choosing unique ancestries, backgrounds, and classes. Characters gain new or improved abilities as they level up, either by gaining experience points or achieving milestones.

Pathfinder offers a more complex gaming experience than the current edition of D&D.

Current Edition

The current edition of Pathfinder is 2nd edition (2e). Publisher Paizo is currently remastering its 2e core books.
