What is Summon?

Summon is an easy to use, fast library search engine that helps you discover information from scholarly journals, books and other items in the collections of the University of Missouri – St. Louis Libraries. Search results link to online articles & books as well as the print holdings of the library.

What Does Summon Search?

Search results include links to:

  • UMSL Library Catalog records;
  • online and print journals,
  • magazine and newspaper articles;
  • print and online books;
  • U.S. government documents;
  • database citations;
  • institutional repositories;
  • conference proceedings;
  • reports
  • dissertations
  • and more!

Additional content is added regularly.

Summon searches most, but not all of our resources. Use our list of databases to perform more specialized searches, or contact the library for reference help if you do not find what you need in Summon.

Using Summon

Use the single search box to start and then “Refine by” using the options on the left, such as:

  • limiting to peer-reviewed journals
  • format/content type (journal, book, newspaper, etc.)
  • subject
  • date
  • location within the UMSL Libraries.

For a more specific search (by author or publication title for example), use the Advanced Search option. See the Help link within Summon for more search tips.
